At some point, your gutter system may start pulling away from your roof’s fascia boards. Gutters can then no longer channel water runoff away from your home properly, exposing your home to water damage. Here’s a look at the various signs of loose gutters and the causes behind that.
Signs of Loose Gutters
- Sagging Gutter. A newly installed gutter system appears parallel to the roofline. However, if you see dips in some sections, that’s a sign that the gutter is about to come loose. Water runoff accumulates in sections of the gutter due to clogs, increasing the chances of sagging and coming loose because of the extra weight.
- Gaps between gutters and fascia board. You know your gutters are coming loose when it’s raining and you can see water running behind the fascia board. That means there’s a gap between the fascia board and the back side of the gutter.
- Spouts forming on your gutters. If a part of the gutter system has a lip that protrudes outward, it will only be a matter of time before that section starts to sag and come loose. This can be brought about by numerous reasons, from simple neglect to attachments no longer securing the gutters properly due to dry rot on the fascia boards.
Causes of Loose Gutters
The most common reason behind loosened gutters is congestion. Leaves, pine needles, bird’s nests and other debris accumulate inside gutters, creating clogs that prevent water runoff from flowing toward the downspouts. Eventually, sagging starts to occur as standing water puts unnecessary strain on your gutters.
Fortunately, loosened gutters can be avoided through regular maintenance. Make sure they’re cleaned thoroughly to minimize clogs. You could also invest in a gutter protection system if you don’t want to deal with constant cleaning.
