How to Keep Birds Out of Your Gutters

Gutters provide an appealing environment for birds to build nests, and for good reason. Gutters are located high above the ground and have a durable outer enclosure. It also helps that your home provides a bit of warmth and protection to keep these feathered creatures comfortable. Birds’ nests, along with other organic debris like dead leaves and twigs, clog up the gutters and prevent them from performing their main function of directing rainwater away from your home.

The following are some of the well-known deterrents that homeowners use to keep birds from perching and nesting in their gutters: 

  • Ultrasonic Bird Repellers.  These emit sounds that are only audible to animals. The issue with this high-tech solution is that these devices are rather costly and require regular maintenance.
  • Decoys.  Rubber figures of snakes and owls may help, but they are proven to be ineffective after a short time. They may also end up clogging your gutters. Birds eventually realize these decoys aren’t real and pose no threat.
  • Bird Repellent.  Bird repellent is made up of chemicals that make it difficult for birds to stay in your gutters. While they are efficient, the repellent must be used on a regular basis.
  • Roof Bird Spikes.  Consider a thin plastic panel with a few spikes protruding from it. Roof bird spikes, also known as anti-roosting strips, are used to prevent birds from roosting on the roof. The strips make landing difficult for birds. You can limit bird access to the gutters by installing spikes on the roof directly above the gutters.
  • Gutter Covers.  Installing gutter guards is a more cost-effective alternative. They keep leaves, debris and critters like birds and rodents out of your gutters, thus reducing upkeep. Most gutter systems, including seamless gutters, are compatible with gutter covers.

Dealing With Bird Nests Inside Gutters

It might be tempting to get rid of the nests inside your gutters, but you shouldn’t, especially if there are eggs in them. Many birds and their nests are protected from being killed, trapped or otherwise disturbed by federal law.
