Common Causes and Solutions for Blown-Off Shingles

Blown-off shingles are issues that are commonly found in residential roofing systems. If you notice this on your roof, it’s recommended that you get them replaced as soon as possible. It also helps to know what caused your shingles to get blown off. But finding out the main cause behind your blown-off shingle problems can help prevent it from happening again in the future. Local  roof repair  and replacement contractor Patriot Roofing LLC gives more insight:

Blown-Off Shingles

The Common Causes

Shingle blow-off is often seen as a sign that a roof may have underlying damage. Let’s say the roof deck is built using plywood sheathing, OSB board or a similar material. If moisture slowly gets through the roof covering and underlayment, it can compromise the roof deck over time. Eventually, the deck becomes rotten and warped, causing the nails to pop out and the shingles to come loose. Shingle blow-off can also indicate the end of a roofing system’s lifespan. A roof’s age also depends on the local climate and its exposure to the natural elements, which explains why some systems age faster than others.

While the type of shingles can contribute to blow-off, it isn’t in a way that directly impacts  roofing  performance. For instance, three-tab shingles usually last around 10 to 15 years while architectural shingles last around 20 to 25 years. But no matter what type of shingle you choose, the adhesive on your roofing system will slowly lose its effectiveness under normal wear and tear. Once it’s near the end of its lifespan, it will be more susceptible to shingle blow-off.

Properly Dealing With Shingle Blow-Off

Usually, one of the best ways to address shingle blow-off issues is by repairing the affected areas. Patchwork can be done by a professional roofer, but whether this is a cost-effective solution will depend on the extent of the damage. If you’re having this type of problem in several areas of your roof, your hired contractor may suggest a full replacement instead. Not only will this be more cost-effective in the long run, but you also won’t have to worry about any future water damage and indoor leaks!
