Tips for Reducing Risk of Fire Damage on Your Roof

Fire damage can occur when you least expect it, and a few preventative measures can help protect your roof against. In today’s post, local  roofing  company Patriot Roofing LLC shares tips on reducing the risk of roofing fire damage.

Reducing Risk of Fire Damage

Invest In a Roof With a Class A Rating

Roofing systems are classified as Class A, B or C for fire resistance, with Class A roofs being the best-performing ones. These classifications are based on the fire-test-response standards set forth in ASTM E108, which includes tests that involve simulated exposure to embers, open flame and gas flame. Having a Class A roof on your home may make you eligible for a discount from your homeowners’ insurance premiums.

Don’t Delay Roof Repairs

Any roofing professional will tell you that there are benefits to timely  roof repair . A small hole or tear can become bigger the longer it’s exposed to the elements. Therefore, the sooner repairs are done, the less work will be needed and the lower the corresponding cost will be. Holes in the roof may let fire or embers into the attic — where insulation and wooden framing components may catch fire.

Keep the Roof Clean

Twigs and dry leaves on the roof can act as kindling and increase the risk of the roof catching on fire, and keeping them on the roof can increase the risk of fire damage. Spot-check the roof every once in a while for debris and have it cleaned. Water from a garden hose (you may need to use an attachment) is often enough to push debris towards the gutters, where you can scoop them out. Never use a pressure when washing the rooftop as it can cause damage to the roofing surface.

Trim the Tree Limbs Close to Your Roof

If you have tree limbs that are almost touching your roof, talk to an arborist or landscaping professional about creating a clearance between the trees and the rooftop. Sharp branches that touch the roof may scratch the protective layer off the roofing surface. It can also put the roof at risk of fire damage if the tree catches on fire.
