The Importance of the Soffit and Fascia on Roof Ventilation

The soffit and fascia may not be as obvious as the other roof components, but they play a vital role in your home, especially when it comes to ventilation. Trusted  roof repair  contractor Patriot Roofing LLC explains more below.

The Fascia Board

The fascia is a long horizontal strip of material along the roof’s edge. It keeps the gutters and their attachments intact, which is why it needs to be durable enough to bear the weight of the entire gutter system, including the volume of rainwater it can hold. It also endures rainwater overflow whenever the gutters get clogged. Ignoring it can fast-track the deterioration of this roofing component.

Apart from giving the roofline a clean, smooth appearance, the fascia also prevents small animals like rodents and insects from building their nests in the roof’s underside. Given its importance in minimizing moisture and pest damage, you’ll want to have it inspected during yearly inspections and maintenance by your  roofing  contractor. Make sure to also keep your gutters clean to prolong the life of your fascia.

The Soffit

With the fascia board installed, you can be sure the nearby soffit won’t have any problems keeping your roof well-ventilated. This roofing component is located under the roof’s eaves, keeping your roof’s rafters and other wooden components concealed. It also has perforations or small openings that allow cool outdoor air to enter and pass through the attic. As this happens, the warm, moist air accumulating inside the attic gets pushed upwards, exiting through the exhaust vents located at the roof’s high points.

Ensuring the soffits are vented lessens the chance of mold and mildew growth caused by excess moisture inside the attic. It also prevents heat from building up inside and expediting the premature aging of the roof’s components.
