Why is Your Shingle Roof Losing Granules?

Your roof’s shingles are essentially made by adhering asphalt granules to a shingle substrate. This layer of granular material provides a layer that protects your roof from UV rays, sunlight and other weather elements. You can expect some granule loss from your shingles as part of its normal wear and tear, but there are some cases when this happens prematurely or when the shingles are losing too many granules.

To determine the condition of your shingle roof, you’ll need to have it inspected by a professional roofing and  gutter installation  contractor. They’ll look for telltale signs of granule loss, such as:

Blistered Shingles

Sometimes, the pimple-like protrusions you see from a shingle surface are just a “cosmetic” factory defect by its manufacturers. But the blisters can also become the first wear points of your shingles when the upper layer wears away and exposes small round dots of missing granules on the surface.

Old Roof

When your shingle roof is near the end of its lifespan, the granules will start to wash off and leave “bald” areas that are exposing the black shingle substrate. These spots are more porous and vulnerable to water leaks. If you notice that your roof already has some bald spots, make sure to have it repaired by your trusted  roofing  contractor to prevent further damage to your home’s interiors.

Wear and Tear

Another sign to look out for is the normal wear and tear of your roofing system in the local environment. Granule loss can be the result of your roof being constantly exposed to the weather and sunlight over time. Eventually, your shingles will lose their flexibility as the whole roof goes through constant temperature changes during each season over the years.

The granules remaining in your shingles can also indicate its “wear age” or its remaining lifespan compared to its original warranty. So if you’re only having normal shingle granule loss, it means there’s no your roof hasn’t been severely damaged so far.
